Windows XP Mode Overview

Windows XP Mode on a computer that is running a supported host operating system, you can create and run virtual machines that use the full resources of the computer. It is handy because we want the Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system, but are limited to Windows 7 for compatibility reasons. Windows XP Mode allows you to run one copy of Windows XP, at virtually the same time as running another copy of Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10 so there’s no need to turn off the computer and reboot into a different OS when switching tasks.

With Windows XP Mode, you can run many Windows XP productivity programs in a partition on your Windows 7 Professional, Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1 PC and access them via the Start menu within Windows 7. For example, you could run Microsoft Office Word XP in a virtual machine on your Windows 7 Professional PC. It is based on Windows Virtual PC but has been integrated with existing virtualization and security technologies in the latest version of Windows, allowing you to run multiple isolated instances of Windows XP on one physical PC while providing robust security.

The ability to run vintage applications is a great way to extend the capabilities of your installation. Windows XP Mode lets you run entire XP applications within Windows 7 without rebooting, multiple log-on, or other lengthy measures to accommodate those applications.
