This application includes extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness, contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold. It uses AVI container format to store captured video. VirtualDub can delete segments of a video file but this application capable of mixing dissimilar video files. Besides those basic features, its many third party plug in make VirtualDub powerful video editing.

It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Vegas Pro, Camtasia Studio or Adob Premiere Pro, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read MPEG video files and also handle sets of BMP images. It’s a basic video editor but has many strengths like the ability to export in many video, audio and image file formats like BMP. The author updates the program on a regular basis unlike the other premium video editors.

You can use this to edit small and short videos, it works on most video format. Less complicated and user friendly, interface is pretty linear, good for beginner and new users alike. What you like about this is its simple user experience, it’s not that hard to master the ways on how to edit videos with this software. It’s basically just drag and drop video editing software, which makes it easy and takes less time than many other video editor software.

For a free and open source application, I was impressed by how smoothly it ran, it didn’t give me many problems. The videos I made came along well, however, the thing I found most frustrating and annoying was the fact that creating video and saving it was ridiculously slow. Overall, VirtualDub is must have for everyone who wants to edit and record videos as well.
